If it cannot tell the difference, it is fooled into thinking it's in a specific gear. If the ECU sees a specific resistance consistent with a specific gear, it cannot tell the difference. You have no knowledge of what the ECU was actually doing, since you were not there monitoring anything. There is no gear indicator on a busa, only the FI light to indicate a trouble code.
